Appropriate Exercise“The current recommendation on physical activity is that adults should participate in a minimum of 30 minutes of at least moderate intensity activity (such as brisk walking, cycling or climbing the stairs) on five or more days of the week.” Its is a fact that in the UK almost 2 out of 3 adults do not meet the governments recommendation for physical activity across all age ranges.
Taking the appropriate amount of physical activity is a key part of living a healthy lifestyle. The more intense the activity is the greater the health benefit.
In order for the body to perform the physical activity, the muscles consume oxygen in a process know as aerobic respiration to produce energy. Therefore the intake of oxygen increases (breathing rate increases) and it is delivered to the muscles that need it quicker (heart rate increases). As the intensity of activity increases further the amount of oxygen reaching the muscles decreases and therefore the body produces energy through anaerobic respiration (respiration in the absence of oxygen).
As the heart rate has increases this strengthens the muscles that surround the heart and control the beat of the heart. There are many other benefits to physical activity; It has been proven to reduce the risks of obesity, heart disease, certain types of cancer, it can help speed up the lymphatic system (removal of toxins) and it can also promote the release of endorphins which help lift ones mood. |
